Mountain Biking at Its Best

With its many abrupt elevation changes, well organized forest lands and long history with two-wheelers (the pedal-assisted bicycle was invented in New Haven), Connecticut turns out to be a great place for mountain biking. There are dozens upon dozens of terrific trails in the state, many of them within state parks or forests. So get out your bike and helmet and begin your travels.

Westwoods, Guilford
This land conservation trust includes miles of trails on 1,200 acres. “The most highly recommended area in the New Haven shoreline area.”

Mianus Maze, Greenwich
This is a 14-mile loop trail with the Mianus River as its centerpiece. “Excellent for intense mountain biking . . . many different paths for a great workout and an exciting ride.”

Mohawk State Forest, Cornwall/Goshen
This well-mapped gem in northwest Connecticut features more than 15 miles of both paved roadways and unpaved doubletrack forest traces. Stunning in fall.

Miller’s Pond, Durham
This popular spot for mountain biking (it’s a state park) offers “some of the best technical riding in Connecticut . . . lots of log rides, technical uphill climbs and great XC riding.”

Rockland Preserve, Madison
In this local preserve you’ll find purpose-built bike trails created by volunteers. “Many of the log rides are works of art, with integrated chainsaw designs along the tops.”

Collis P. Huntington State Park, Bethel
Here you’ll find about 10 miles of trails, short, easy loops around the ponds, rougher terrain and steeper climbs elsewhere.

Pachaug State Forest, Voluntown
Pachaug is a 24,000-acre outdoor playground in eastern Connecticut, and mountain biking is one of its prime features. More than 20 miles of trails, consisting of single track, double track and woods roads.

Case Mountain, Manchester
The trails that wind through this 640-acre town park  boast “lung busting climbs, amazing views, extremely technical riding and hucks galore.” Bicycling Magazine once called it the best place in Connecticut to ride.
