Interplay: Joseph Byrne and Elizabeth Gourlay

April 21 - May 21

This year’s Annual Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Invitational Exhibition is Interplay: Joseph Byrne and Elizabeth Gourlay. The artists’ work centers on interactions of color,  hape, line, and space. Byrne’s paintings begin with still life arrangements of objects; Gourlay calls on her longdeveloped language of abstraction based on geometric shapes and line.

There are also 2 solo exhibits: Susan Spaniol's mixed media solo show, Event at Herring Cove, was inspired by her viewing the dissection of a giant battered whale carcass on a windswept Cape Cod beach. In the second show, twenty seven artists contribute to Marks, Symbols, Lines: Calligraphic Art in New England in a celebration of the elegance and beauty of alphabet and writing in both contemporary and traditional forms.

Opening reception for all shows on April 21, from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. An artist's talk for the Invitational Exhibition will be held at 5 p.m. ahead of the reception.
