19. TIME OUT
WOODBURY
Begin your day in Woodbury, “Connecticut’s Antiques Capital.” In town, there are more than 45 dealers selling items including antique clocks, watches, scientific instruments and old good things of every other sort.

Break for lunch in Woodbury at Phillips Diner, popular since the 1930s. It is famous for its chicken pies, donuts, pancakes, and no-pretense atmosphere.
TIMEXPO
Drive to Waterbury, home of Timexpo: The Timex Museum. Here, you’ll learn the history of the company from the 1850s to the present. In the museum shop, you can buy all manner of watches, along with miniature clocks and collectibles. You can even wander through a time tunnel to view an exhibit about Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002), the Norwegian adventurer who sailed 4,300 miles on a balsa wood raft from South American to the Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia.
CURTIS HOUSE
Check in to the Curtis House, Connecticut’s oldest inn. Built in Woodbury in 1736, the inn offers air-conditioned rooms with canopied beds and onsite dining.

Dinner and a movie is never out of fashion. Enjoy it in style at the Gilson Café-Cinema in Winsted. In the restored cabaret theater, you can watch second-run movies at café tables, while noshing on appetizers, entrees, sandwiches and desserts. There’s a full bar, too.
AMERICAN CLOCK AND WATCH MUSEUM
The next day, after breakfast at the Curtis House, head to the American Clock and Watch Museum in Bristol. You’ll hear clocks, tick strike and chime, as you explore the collection of 1,400 timepieces, largely dating between 1800 and 1940. The grounds include an early American sundial garden.

In Cheshire, savor a hot dog at Blackie’s, a roadside drive-in since 1928. Try your dog with peppery relish.
BARKER CHARACTER, COMIC AND CARTOON MUSEUM
Also in Cheshire, visit the Barker Character, Comic and Cartoon Museum, featuring 80,000 nostalgic collectibles (none for sale) amassed by Herb and Gloria Barker. Here you’ll find a Ronald McDonald phone, a Charlie McCarthy Puppet, Mickey Mouse memorabilia, and much more.
