Here’s a couple of train rides with a difference. Get your tickets now and then get to Essex’s 1892 train station for the North Pole Express and Santa Special, both aboard the Essex Steam Train. The North Pole Express is a night ride with on-board performances of The Night Before Christmas. Kids are encouraged to wear pajamas and enjoy the hot chocolate and sugar cookies. The Santa Special is a daytime ride that features Santa, Rudolph and Pablo the Penguin.

Griswold Inn

Griswold Inn

Once back in town, head for your overnight accommodation at the historic Griswold Inn, one of the oldest (1776) continuously operated inns in the nation. The Gris is a lively place, full of history and good cheer, with a restaurant, tap room and wine bar. Sample the best of nearby farms, orchards and waters.

Connecticut River Museum

The next morning, stroll to the Connecticut River Museum’s dock for a good look at the big river and, if you’re lucky, some of its wildlife. Inside the museum, you’ll find exhibits highlighting the river’s historic legacy. Next, make your way back to Main Street, where quaint shops beckon with jewelry, fashion and more – and finally to Abby’s Place for lunch with a riverfront view.
