Virtual Experience:

Please come with the iNaturalist app downloaded onto your smartphone, or a digital camera that you can use to capture your observations. Storytime & Scavenger Hunt, from 11 a.m. until noon. Your child will hear a story about a woman who beautifies her town by spreading flower seeds. The children will be given their own supply of seeds take home to spread. Connecticut Audubon Society Center at Fairfield, Fairfield

In-Person Experience:
Connect with nature at Connecticut Audubon Center at Fairfield. Explore the variety of ecosystems and wildlife habitats in the 155-acre Larsen Sanctuary. Seven miles of trails, open dawn to dusk, include the Chiboucas wheelchair-accessible trail. Visit the Birds of Prey compound to meet the raptors that serve as ambassadors in environmental education programs. Fairfield University Art Museum, Fairfield

Virtual Experience:
The Fairfield University Art Museum's exhibition Birds of the Northeast: Gulls to Great Auks features paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, photographs, and natural history specimens from the early 19th century through the present day. Beyond merely connecting us to the natural world, the artworks in this exhibition remind us of the toll taken on bird habitats since the beginning of European colonialism in North America; the delicate ecosystems that allow birds of all species to thrive came under attack, as birds were hunted for food and ornamentation and their habitats were destroyed. This exhibition offers our viewers a 3D virtual tour, and a video tour of the exhibition installed in the gallery. We also offer numerous recordings of previous bird-related lectures. The digital exhibition catalog and Birds of Fairfield Guide are offered in English and Spanish. This exhibition showcases artwork that will appeal to all nature lovers and will excite the viewer to get outdoors and explore Connecticut wildlife!

In-Person Experience:
Rowayton Arts Center (RAC) will be open with extended hours from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., visit the gallery to view a new open juried show In the City and tour the classroom studio upstairs. There is also a "Painting en Plein Air" workshop for all ages and experience from 11 a.m.  to 4 p.m. (fee $85). Students will meet at RAC for an introduction to the basics of values, composition and creating a sense of depth before painting around the building or in nearby Pinkney Park. Amistad Center for Art & Culture at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford

In-Person Experience:
Join The Amistad Center for Art & Culture and the Wadsworth for Juneteenth Family Day - a free event being hosted outside of the Wadsworth, with accompanying virtual programming available online. Enjoy the grounds of Connecticut's Old State House between noon and 4 p.m. The 1796 National Historic Landmark served as one of Connecticut's two-state capitols. Blow bubbles, play games, participate in an outdoor scavenger hunt, or bring a blanket and enjoy a picnic on the lawn. At 1:30 p.m., rock out with the Balkun Brothers. Join an outdoor walking tour at 2:30 p.m., meet at Information Table.
Virtual Experience:

Dinosaur State Park, Rocky Hill

In-Person Experience:
If you like dinosaurs, you will love the 200-million-year-old fossil trackway, interactive exhibits, and the chance to cast your own dinosaur footprint to take home. The exhibit center will be open to the public from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and will not charge admission as part of Connecticut Open House Day. The state park grounds are open for walking, birding, picnicking and other outdoor exploration.

 

East Hartford Public Library, East Hartford

Virtual Experience:
For the 17th annual Connecticut Open House Day, the East Hartford Public Library is offering a virtual tour of five highlights from its museum collection. Join Head of Reference & Cultural Assets Manager Jason Pannone as we look at some of the gems from the collection.

 

First Church of Christ Meetinghouse, Farmington

Virtual Experience:
In celebration of 250 years of history, First Church of Christ, Congregational, 1652 welcomes you to a "Brief History of The Meetinghouse." This National Historic Landmark in Farmington, designed by Judah Woodruff, features a tall steeple which can be seen for miles. Originally a town building, it was used for both worship and public meetings until 1836. It has remained in continuous use by the church since November 25, 1772.

 

Galleries at Work_Space, Manchester

In-Person Experience:
Visit the Galleries at WORK_SPACE, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., for the opening of Juneteenth: The Art of Independence, an exhibit featuring art that celebrates independence, resiliency, and Black lives. Lutz Children’s Museum, Manchester

In-Person Experience:
Touch a Truck! A variety of trucks will be at the museum from noon until 3 p.m. for everyone to check out, climb in and explore. There will also be live music outside as long as the weather is good, inside if it's not so great. Admission to the museum is free this day, but reservations are required, so we do not go over our capacity limits. You do not need a reservation to check out the trucks, just to enter the museum. All patrons aged 2 and up are still required to wear a mask inside the museum.

 

Mark Twain House & Museum, Hartford

Virtual Experience:
We will be offering Facebook Live feeds at five to six different times throughout the day, in which people can join us for Virtual Tom Sawyer Day: A Musical Celebration. We will be featuring local musicians, and choral groups, our living history actors will do readings, and we will be hosting Adelka Polak's puppetry Show Metamophis.

 

National Iwo Jima Memorial Park, New Britain/Newington

Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society, West Hartford

In-Person Experience:
Come visit the birthplace of founding father and creator of American English, Noah Webster. Tour the first floor of Webster's c. 1720 home, learn more about his role as the author of the first American dictionary with the exhibit The Story Behind the Words, and explore the reproduction of the Webster family's 18th-century kitchen garden.

 

Nowash Village at Wood Memorial Library & Museum, South Windsor

In-Person Experience:
Nowashe Village is an outdoor museum of Indigenous life comprised of two wigwams, a Sachem’s house, Three Sisters garden, and communal fire area. Featured Native Artisan, Dylan Smith, will discuss the clothing, jewelry and regalia worn by East Coast Native Peoples. Activities include storytelling, hands-on crafts for kids, multimedia self-guided tour and Native American stone tools and artifacts. Free admission from noon until 4 p.m.
Virtual Experience:
Can’t visit Nowashe Village in person? Experience it at home! We offer online programs about the life ways of the Indigenous Peoples of the Connecticut River Valley. Watch the Introduction to Native Storytelling with Annawon Weeden for free. Understanding the oral tradition and a little about the types of stories that were told, sets a fascinating introduction to learning more about thousands of years of Native American history in New England.

 

Old New-Gate Prison & Copper Mine, East Granby

In-Person Experience:
Offering free admission all day for visitors on Connecticut Open House Day! Museums hours are 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Free admission includes self-guided exploration of the open-air prison yard, as well as a guided tour of the copper mine. Tours are roughly 30 minutes and traverse 100-yard loop, 75 ft. below ground. Closed toed shoes are recommended, and it is always 52 degrees in the mine. We look forward to seeing you!

Pitkin Glass Works, Manchester

In-Person Experience:
From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., the site will be open for tours and there will be an opportunity for budding archaeologists (children only) to dig and sift for artifacts. Pitkin Glassworks is a historic industrial archaeological site that contains the remains of one of the oldest glass factories in New England, established in 1783.

 

Pratt Street, Hartford

In-Person Experience:
The Pratt Street Historic District is kicking off its event season with a street-wide party from noon until 5 p.m. on CT Open House Day. The Summer Kickoff Party on Pratt will launch a full calendar of events and programming that will take place on the street through the end of the year. Attendees who sign up for the Pratt Street email marketing list will receive one free beer, wine, or house made Irish cream at Vaughan’s Irish Public House. This portion of the event is sponsored by Shelbourne, the real estate company behind the restoration of historic Pratt Street. There will be live entertainment by singer/songwriter Canyon and DJ Sonia Sol, a fashion show by Morneault's Stackpole Moore Tryon, and food and drink specials by Sorella and Sunberry. Community Health Center will be hosting a free vaccination clinic at 103 Pratt Street.

Come experience the history of communications. Expert guides will take you through the decades of development from carrier pigeons through the development of telegraph, the movies, Victrolas, and radio, to the advent of the personal computer.

 

Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford

In-Person Experience:
Join the Wadsworth for Juneteenth Family Day. In-Person Experience:
The Wethersfield Museum currently has three exhibits on view: Wethersfield Women, Castle on the Cove: The State Prison at Wethersfield, and our permanent exhibit Legendary People, Ordinary Lives. Admission to the museum is free and the Historical Society will be offering a free refrigerator magnet to all visitors featuring a photo of one of the society's properties.
Virtual Experience:
This exhibit is the virtual version of Wethersfield Women, currently on view in the Watson Gallery of the Wethersfield Museum. It features all the panels in the exhibit and custom photographs of the artifacts on display.

Art in the Barn, an exhibition of area artists of paintings, linocuts, drawings, photography, ceramics and weaving. The Museum re-opens on June 12 with two new exhibits celebrating local history. Milking Memories, this exhibit features stories of the farming community in Watertown and Oakville from Colonial times to the 20th-century.
Stories in Service: In War & In Peace honors citizens who served in the military or supported War efforts as civilians from the French and Indian War through the present.
Virtual Experience:
Launched May 1, 2021, the Spring Walking Tour featured 18 buildings and monuments in historic Watertown. The webpage for this event includes an online gallery providing "Then and Now" viewpoints. For Museum Open House day, we hope to launch an additional online exhibit with more detailed histories.

Custom House Maritime Museum, New London

In-Person Experience:
Visit New London's Custom House and see the fantastic artwork from Nathan Hale Arts Magnet School and Harbor School's third graders. They have recently completed the New London Local-History & Landmarks course, a program of the New London Maritime Society. NLMS educator Christina Corcoran writes, "The artwork from Mrs. Wallace, Mrs. Tynan, Mr. Fitzmaurice, Mrs. Clark, and Mr. Lyons' classes corresponds to five virtual field trips: 'Intro to New London's landmarks', 'New London Waterfront', 'New London in the early days', 'New London in the American Revolution, and 'New London in the Whaling era'. With each lesson, the students were asked to complete a worksheet make a drawing. The drawings were beyond my expectations and have to be shared with the community. The students enjoyed the 'draw your favorite ship' and 'favorite lighthouse' assignments the most! There are some submarine drawings as well. The students added their own favorites not addressed in the classes such as pirates walking the plank!!!"

On September 6, 1781, the Ebenezer Avery House took in wounded soldiers from the Battle of Groton Heights. The House was moved to its present location on the grounds of Fort Griswold where it is a period museum of colonial history. On June 12, they will be offering house tours.

 

Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park, Groton

In-Person Experience:
The Friends of Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park will be offering guided tours of the Fort at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., as well as access to the Museum, Monument, and gift shop. "Abby Slocomb" will visit at noon to tell the story of her life here in Groton, where she designed the Connecticut state flag, and her adventures abroad. Visitors are welcome to tour the grounds on their own bring a picnic.

Joseph Carpenter Silversmith Shop, Norwich

In-Person Experience:
The Joseph Carpenter Silversmith Shop, located at 71 East Town St. on the Norwichtown Green, is one of the last frame tradesmen shops left in New England. You will see the original silversmith forge from 1772 and displays on the tradesmen of Norwich. The shop will be open in 2021 to visitors for the first time, starting on June 12, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Free for visitors, COVID-19 protocols of masks and thoughtful social distancing. Lebanon Historical Society Museum, Lebanon

In-Person Experience:
Celebrating traditional crafts and free Family Fun Day, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Activities include ride in a Model T, turn a wooden pen, try your hand at old-time chores: corn grinding, apple peeling, rug beating, butter churning, washboard washing, along with traditional children’s games and crafts. Thames River Heritage Park, New London/Groton

In-Person Experience:
ONE RIVER. A THOUSAND STORIES. Hop aboard the Thames River Heritage Park water taxi and witness history come alive while visiting the historic USS Nautilus, Fort Trumbull State Park, Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park, and many more local historic sites. Connecticut Open House Day special water taxi fare is $5 for all, children ages 3 and under are free. Tickets are available on the boats. Water taxis begin at 11:40 a.m. from City Pier in New London and follow a continuous loop to landings at Fort Trumbull State Park on the hour, City Pier at 20 minutes after the hour, and Thames Landing in Groton City at 40 minutes after the hour. Please remember to be respectful of social distancing. Masks are required on the boats and at all partner sites.

 

Thomas Lee House, Niantic

In-Person Experience:
The Thomas Lee House, circa 1660, and the Little Boston School, 1803, will be open for tours along with our barns historical displays. Outdoors you can enjoy the herb garden and there will be tables of local information.

 

Wylie Schoolhouse, Voluntown

In-Person Experience:
Participants are invited to visit the Wylie Schoolhouse, built in 1850 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, to learn about its history and the ongoing restoration efforts underway to preserve it for future generations and by way of celebrating the town of Voluntown's 300th birthday this year. Open House hours are from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with members of the Voluntown Historical Society serving as event hosts.

Art & Garden Tour of Northeast Connecticut

In-Person Experience:
A free self-guided tour features 11 artists' gardens displaying the works of 17 area artists. Enjoy paintings, sculpture, ceramics, woodwork, photography, and other works of art in gardens in Ashford, Coventry, Mansfield, and Willington. The gardens, which vary in style, include a handmade greenhouse, a hydroponic greenhouse, ponds and pools, a stone arch, paths, terraces, and an abundance of flowers, shrubs, vegetables, trees, and herbs. Finnish Hall & Museum, Canterbury

In-Person Experience:

The Finnish Hall was constructed in 1925 and the interior hall and stage are basically original in style. The facility has a newer constructed museum, library, and archive. There is memorabilia from several early Finnish American organizations in the Northeast included NYC. The visit will be supported by members with excellent background information of Finnish immigrants and the importance of them to our country’s history. The tours will be available free of charge from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

 

Watercure Farm Distillery, Pomfret Center

In-Person Experience:
The distillery will be open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. and will be offering 20% off all bottle sales to those who mention Connecticut Open House Day! We will also be offering on site tastings in the form of flights or cocktails. Locally made pub cheese and crackers are available as additional purchase. Outside food and pets welcome.

 

Willow Tree Pottery, Ashford

In-Person Experience:
Suzy Staubach is a potter, writer, and gardener. She makes simple yet elegant platters, bowls, mugs, baking dishes, table and kitchen ware. Her newest book is A Garden Miscellany: An Illustrated Guide to the Elements of the Garden. Her blowsy cottage garden of old-fashioned flowers at Willow Tree Pottery is set in an old hayfield. Visitors are welcome to choose a handmade amulet to take home. Barbara Katz, Gretchen Geromin and Lauren Merlo will be guest artists.
