Museums & Studios Last Updated: June 2021

Art and history are everywhere in Connecticut. From galleries to historic homes and more, here is a list of both in-person and virtual experiences that will be offered on June 12.

Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield

In-Person Experience:
The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is pleased to offer half-priced admission to visitors for Connecticut Open House Day. Timed-entry tickets or reservations must be made in advance. Three exhibitions will be on view in the museum: Tim Prentice: After the Mobile, Lucia Hierro: Marginal Costs, and Hugo McCloud: from where i stand. Sculptures by Frank Stella will be on view outside on the museum's grounds and Sculpture Garden.
Virtual Experience:
Enjoy a virtual tour of Tim Prentice's exhibition, After the Mobile, led by Prentice and his collaborator David Colbert, and moderated by The Aldrich's Exhibitions Director Richard Klein.

 

American Clock & Watch Museum, Bristol

In-Person Experience:
Reduced admission! The American Clock & Watch Museum will be open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. with special activities offered throughout the day for visitors of all ages.
Virtual Experience:
Clock demonstrations, craft activities, and videos of the galleries and special exhibits will be posted on the museum's Facebook page.
 

 

Amistad Center for Art & Culture at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford

In-Person Experience:
Join The Amistad Center for Art & Culture and the Wadsworth for Juneteenth Family Day - a free event being hosted outside of the Wadsworth, with accompanying virtual programming available online. Festivities at the museum include: art pack giveaway (noon-2 p.m.), free ice cream (noon-2 p.m., while supplies last), a sidewalk community art project, pop-up by key bookstore, interactive drum and dance performance by stilt walker Mellissa Craig and FriendZWorld Music (12:30 p.m.-2 p.m.0, Juneteenth Celebration Stroll led by Mellissa Craig and friends (1:30 p.m.-2 p.m.), and Storyteller Angel R. and her arts troupe 515United share African folktales in the Amistad Center gallery beginning at 1 p.m.
Virtual Experience:
Virtual programming will include educational online activities and printouts. Videos will be available June 12 and accessible thereafter via amistadcenter.org

 

 

Artisans at Middle River, Stafford Springs

In-Person Experience:
Artisans at Middle River is a collection of 35 local artisans offering a wide range of beautifully crafted home goods, children's toys and clothing, fashion accessories, and artwork. We also carry local honey, maple syrup, and candles, and offer other tasty teas and food items as well. Enter a raffle to win a gift card.

 

Arts Center East, Vernon

In-Person Experience:
Our mission is to advance the arts for everyone through education, exhibits, events, and performances. During Connecticut Open House Day, please stop by and view An Image is Worth 1000 Words and Ekphrastic Extravaganza: Art & Poetry, featuring the works of local and regional artists. The center will be open from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.

 

Ballard Institute & Museum of Puppetry, Storrs

In-Person Experience:
The Ballard Institute's new exhibit Puppetry's Racial Reckoning and the redesigned World of Puppetry exhibit will be on display. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., by reservation only, with free admission.

 

Clinton Historical Society Gardens & Grounds, Clinton

In-Person Experience:
Take part in a guided tour of the gardens and grounds of the Clinton Historical Society. Enjoy the smokehouse, the Library, the Buell Tool Museum, our wee Fairy Garden, and the beautiful statues curated especially for our gardens. Open from noon until 4 p.m.

 

Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford

In-Person Experience:
Free admission to galleries all day! And join us for a free guided exhibit tour at 11 a.m. (pre-registration required; spaces are limited). Register at chs.org/guidedtours.

Connecticut River Museum, Essex

In-Person Experience:
Open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., with free admission for the first 50 visitors. Children’s crafts from 10 a.m. until noon.

 

Connecticut Trolley Museum, East Windsor

In-Person Experience:
Half price admission from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

 

Danbury Museum, Danbury

In-Person Experience:
Enjoy our beautiful museum gardens and take in our outdoor exhibits as well as a mini (outdoor) walking tour of our campus. There will be added digital content for those who visit, too. Open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

 

Earthly Goddess - A Clay Co-Op, Durham

In-Person Experience:
Come in to the new Earthly Goddess studio at the Red Barn Art Center for Studio tours and craft demonstrations. We will also have Artisan made goods for sale.

 

Fairfield Museum and History Center, Fairfield

In-Person Experience:
Visit the Fairfield Museum and History Center to experience amazing exhibitions and more. Learn about all of the wonderful in-person and virtual programming has to offer including speaker series, walking tours, educational experiences, summer youth workshops and fun family activities. Stop in the Museum shop for unique local merchandise and great gift items.
The museum will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., with free admission.

 

Fairfield University Art Museum, Fairfield

Virtual Experience:
The Fairfield University Art Museum's exhibition Birds of the Northeast: Gulls to Great Auks features paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, photographs, and natural history specimens from the early 19th century through the present day. Beyond merely connecting us to the natural world, the artworks in this exhibition remind us of the toll taken on bird habitats since the beginning of European colonialism in North America; the delicate ecosystems that allow birds of all species to thrive came under attack, as birds were hunted for food and ornamentation and their habitats were destroyed. This exhibition offers our viewers a 3D virtual tour, and a video tour of the exhibition installed in the gallery. We also offer numerous recordings of previous bird-related lectures. The digital exhibition catalog and Birds of Fairfield Guide are offered in English and Spanish. This exhibition showcases artwork that will appeal to all nature lovers, and will excite the viewer to get outdoors and explore Connecticut wildlife!

 

Fenton River Studio, Storrs

In-Person Experience:
Experience a fascinating creative environment featuring an informal garden enhanced with a koi pond, colorful cast leaves, cement sculptures of sheep, chickens, peacocks, frogs, and lions. Inside the spacious studio find more than 150 award winning paintings of landscape, seascape and western life, sheep, horses and cows; rendered in oil, watercolor, pastel, or charcoal. One of sixteen artists presenting an Art and Garden Tour June 12-13.

 

 

Galleries at Work_Space, Manchester

In-Person Experience:
Visit the Galleries at WORK_SPACE, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., for the opening of Juneteenth: The Art of Independence, an exhibit featuring art that celebrates independence, resiliency, and Black lives. Join us onsite to view the exhibit, peruse the Gallery Shop, watch artist Jaii Marc Renee create original work and meet other artists featured in the show. Free admission.

 

Gallery 25 & Creative Arts Studio, New Milford

In-Person Experience:
Gallery 25 will be offering free critique to any artist or artisan who would like to have their work reviewed. We will also be holding an Art Scavenger Hunt for our younger visitors throughout the day. We will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

 

Gallery 53, Meriden

In-Person Experience:
Echoes Through Time is an exhibit of work by past members including John Neff, Chien Fei Chiang, and Edward F. Widstrom. Many of these artists worked as designers in Meriden’s thriving manufacturing companies, such as International Silver.  Open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Offering complimentary gift wrapping and parking in garage across the street. Gallery 53 also has a gift shop featuring 100+ local artisans’ jewelry, pottery, metal sculptures, glass, accessories, and children’s items.
 

 

Gallery at Still River Editions, Danbury

Virtual Experience:
Digital opening of the "10 Year Retrospective Group Exhibition" at The Gallery at Still River Editions featuring work by over 25 gallery artists from Connecticut and the northeast. The works from the exhibition will be featured in a slideshow.

 

 

Greater Middletown Military Museum, Middletown

In-Person Experience:
The Museum is located in beautiful Veterans Park adjacent to the CT Trees of Honor and the Huey Helicopter. The museum collection of artifacts, books, weapons, uniforms, and more represent all military services and focuses on Connecticut's contributions to the military. Your experience will include the stories that bring military experience to life. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., with free admission.

 

 

Gunn Memorial Museum, Washington

In-Person Experience:
Free one-hour guided tours of the national award-winning exhibit, Washington Connecticut - An American Story, given on the top of every hour between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.. Visitors can also stop by any time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to explore the exhibit on their own. The exhibit shares the story of the unique people, places, and events that have shaped Washington’s rich history.

 

Indian and Colonial Research Center, Old Mystic

Virtual Experience:
The Mission of The Indian and Colonial Research Center is to preserve and make accessible to the public, the collected works of Eva Butler and additional historical and genealogical materials of the people of Old Mystic, Connecticut and surrounding areas. This year the Indian and Colonial Research Center is offering a virtual tour of our historic building and unique collections.

 

Institute for American Indian Studies, Washington

In-Person Experience:
The Institute for American Indian Studies is participating in Connecticut Open House Day! Come to our museum to learn about the more than 10,000-year history of Connecticut’s Native American inhabitants. Museum educators and docents will be stationed throughout the museum and in our Outdoor Replicated Algonkian village, along with self-guided educational activities. Stop by to get a taste of the immersive activities and programs that we offer visitors of all ages throughout the year. Museum capacity is limited, pre-registration is requested. Iwo Jima / World War II Museum, East Hartford

In-Person Experience:
Come view and touch historic artifacts from the Battle of Iwo Jima and World War II. Learn about the servicemen who fought, view battle videos and photos and try on a uniform.

 

 

Lock Museum of America, Terryville

In-Person Experience:
When visiting the museum you will see the finest builders and hardware ever made. Designed, patented, and manufactured right here in Connecticut. Open from noon until 4 p.m.

 

Lyman Allyn Art Museum, New London

In-Person Experience:
Offering free admission. Come see the permanent exhibitions, American Perspectives and Louis Comfort Tiffany in New London, along with the temporary shows, Memories & Inspiration: The Kerry and C. Betty Davis Collection of African American Art, and Forest Dreaming: Sculptures and Paintings by Ana Flores. MoCA Westport, Westport

In-Person Experience:
Visit the current exhibition, Smash, featuring the video works of contemporary artist Marilyn Minter. On Connecticut Open House Day, admission will be free! Minter’s videos are exhibited together for the first time in a public institution. Marilyn Minter’s custom-designed AMC Pacer automobile featuring an interior, surround viewing of her work Green Pink Caviar, is also exhibited for the first time. Bring your own lunch and enjoy a table in our beautiful outdoor setting.

 

New Britain Industrial Museum, New Britain

In-Person Experience:
Open from noon until 5 p.m. and the museum is offering a Stanley plane poster to the first 25 parties or groups.

 

New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain

In-Person Experience:
Enjoy FREE admission all day. Explore the permanent collections plus special exhibition Jennifer Wen Ma: An Inward Sea. Included with your free admission is a family-friendly Sculpture Garden Tour Guide and Activity Booklet as well as a take-home coloring booklet. New England Air Museum, Windsor Locks

In-Person Experience:
Walk amongst historic aircraft, view cockpits, fly flight simulators, create flying machines, and learn about our collection from members of the museum family. Admission for children (under 14) are free.

 

Real Art Ways, Hartford

In-Person Experience:
Real Art Ways has free admission to our galleries all day.  Real Art Ways is recognized nationally and internationally for the quality of work we present. We support emerging artists as well as those in later stages of their careers, and our program includes local, national, and international artists. We think that contemporary art is something everyone can appreciate and enjoy, and we work to make sure our programs speak to newbies and aficionados alik

 

Rowayton Arts Center, Rowayton

In-Person Experience:
Rowayton Arts Center (RAC) will be open with extended hours from 10 a.m. unitl 4 p.m., visit the gallery to view a new open juried show In the City and tour the classroom studio upstairs. There is also a "Painting en Plein Air" workshop for all ages and experience  from 11 a.m.  to 4 p.m, (fee $85). Students will meet at RAC for an introduction to the basics of values, composition and creating a sense of depth before painting around the building or in nearby Pinkney Park. Susan Rood Studio, New Hartford

In-Person Experience:
Art in the Barn, an exhibition of area artists of paintings, linocuts, drawings, photography, ceramics and weaving. Exhibiting artists include Katie Atkinson, Sheila and Will Cummings, Merrill French, Lisa Gustafson, Leslie Landau, Howard and Susan Rood, Sunny Torres, Jan Wright.  Demonstrations throughout the day and open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

 

Vintage Radio & Communications Museum of Connecticut, Windsor

In-Person Experience:
Come experience the history of communications. Expert guides will take you through the decades of development from carrier pigeons through the development of telegraph, the movies, Victrolas, and radio, to the advent of the personal computer.

 

Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford

In-Person Experience:
Join the Wadsworth for Juneteenth Family Day. Admission is free noon until 5 p.m., and festivities take place from noon until 2 p.m., including art pack giveaway, free ice cream courtesy of Ice Cream for a Dream, sidewalk community art project, Key Bookstore pop-up, performance by Mellissa Craig and FriendZWorld Music, Juneteenth Celebration Stroll, and African folktales by storyteller Angel R. and 515United.

 

 

Watertown History Museum, Watertown

In-Person Experience:
The Museum re-opens on June 12 with two new exhibits celebrating local history. Milking Memories, this exhibit features stories of the farming community in Watertown and Oakville from Colonial times to the 20th-century.
Stories in Service: In War & In Peace honors citizens who served in the military or supported War efforts as civilians from the French and Indian War through the present.
Virtual Experience:
Launched May 1, 2021, the Spring Walking Tour featured 18 buildings and monuments in historic Watertown. The webpage for this event includes an online gallery providing "Then and Now" viewpoints. For Museum Open House day, we hope to launch an additional online exhibit with more detailed histories.

 

 

Wesleyan Potters, Middletown

Virtual Experience:
Please join us in safely celebrating CT Open House Day 2021 with a virtual tour of Wesleyan Potters! We will take you through our pottery studio and kiln room, metalsmithing lab, and weaving loft upstairs. The tour will culminate in a walk-through of our Gallery Shop, your one-stop shop for unique gifts and handmade works of art.
In-Person Experience:
The Gallery Shop will also be open for in-person shopping from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

 

Willow Tree Pottery, Ashford

In-Person Experience:
Suzy Staubach is a potter, writer, and gardener. She makes simple yet elegant platters, bowls, mugs, baking dishes, table and kitchen ware. Her newest book is A Garden Miscellany: An Illustrated Guide to the Elements of the Garden. Her blowsy cottage garden of old fashioned flowers at Willow Tree Pottery is set in an old hayfield. Visitors are welcome to choose a handmade amulet to take home. Barbara Katz, Gretchen Geromin and Lauren Merlo will be guest artists.
Virtual Experience:
Virtually tour the old fashioned cottage gardens at Willow Tree Pottery. Step into the studio and watch Suzy throw. See a few pots. Shop online if you wish.

 

 

Windows Art Gallery, Putnam

In-Person Experience:
Brand new creative space for all things arts and crafts. Many classes and teachers along with a beautiful gallery show of art from local artists. Retail shopping of hand crafted items including home decor, and purses. Paint Party events for both kids and adults.
