Did you know that Connecticut played a key role in the founding of American landscape architecture? Relax in nature and get inspired by historic landscapes designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr., and his successor firm.

The Olmsted Firm (1857-1979) envisioned the preservation of America’s scenic beauty and promoted access to nature for all people to enjoy. Connecticut is Olmsted’s birthplace, gravesite, and numerous landscapes shaped by the Olmsted Firm, including parks, cemeteries, monuments, institutional grounds, and residential estates.

The Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office and Preservation Connecticut are studying the state’s Olmsted landscape heritage as part of a nationwide initiative called Olmsted 200.
