Read More1850s coastal defense fort located on 16 acres on the bank of the historic Thames River. In the mid-to-late 20th century, the fort was the location of the Naval Underwater Systems Center, also known as the sound lab. It was also home to the United States Revenue Cutter Service School, United States Coast Guard Academy, and the United States Maritime Service Officers School during the same period. Today, the site has been restored to its 19th century prominence and includes a visitor center with two floors of theaters and interactive exhibits, a self-guided fort tour, interpretive signage on the grounds, a 500 foot fishing pier, waterfront walking paths, and many beautiful vantage points to view the activity on the Thames River.

Spectacular fishing opportunities abound with a one-of-a-kind fishing pier boasting over 500' of shore-based access to the major game fish of Long Island Sound. Saltwater anglers will find a unique combination of sport fish including striped bass, bluefish, weakfish and tautog as they feed on the variety of bait fish found at the mouth of the Thames River. In addition to 24-hour access, the pier offers bright lighting and individual pole holders for angler comfort; year-round restrooms and fresh running water
