Silvermine is the preeminent visual arts center in Fairfield County with more than 4,500 annual enrollments at the School of Art and 12,000 visitors to the award-winning galleries. Our target audience ranges from the very young to seniors. Silvermine is comprised of five galleries presenting new exhibitions monthly, a gift shop, a School of Art offering a wide range of classes for all ages and levels of experience, public programs and outreach programs in the Norwalk and Stamford schools..

Artists have been drawn to Silvermine since visionary sculptor Solon Borglum moved here in 1908 and established it as a place for artists to gather. The Silvermine Guild of Artists was founded in 1922 and formally incorporated as a 501(c) (3) organization in 1924 when the School of Art was established. Today, the Silvermine Arts Center is comprised of a Guild of more than 300 professional artists.

Silvermine’s services focus on the many facets of quality visual arts. Exhibits range from ever changing contemporary exhibitions including the director’s choice, guild group shows and juried exhibitions. We also offer panel discussions and symposia on current exhibitions, lecture series, school workshops with visiting artists, a range of art courses available for aspiring professional artists and a variety of special events and programming. The center provides its artist members, faculty, students and visitors with a common location where they can share ideas, work on projects, teach, explore new areas and grow in their creativity and talents. The School of Art seeks to educate students of all ages and levels of experience by offering over 100 courses throughout the year.

A game, Art Spy, has been developed for children to also experience the art. The galleries are also a teaching tool used by the School of Art faculty and students as well as the general public and school groups.  The center’s outreach program, Art Partners, now in its 20th year, brings curriculum based, art infused workshops to under-resourced schools in Norwalk and Stamford.
